Adding your first yarn

Your stash is the yarn you own. There are three ways to get yarn into it, and they differ mainly in how much typing you do.

Scan the barcode

The fastest route. Tap Add to stash, then Scan barcode, and point your camera at the ball band. If that yarn is already in the global catalogue, YarnHub fills in the brand, product name, fibre content, weight, and recommended tool size for you. You only supply what is specific to your ball: the colourway, the dye lot, and how much you have.

Barcode scanning needs camera access. If you declined the permission prompt, you can re-enable it in your device settings.

Search the catalogue

If there is no barcode, or scanning does not find a match, search the catalogue by brand or product name. Selecting a result pre-fills the same fields as a scan.

The catalogue is shared across all YarnHub users, so it grows over time as people add yarns to it.

Enter it by hand

For hand-dyed, indie, or vintage yarn that is not catalogued anywhere, use Add manually. You will be asked for:

• Brand and product name. Free text.
• Colourway. The name or number on the band.
• Weight. Pick from the list; it displays in your chosen regional system.
• Fibre content. Optional, but useful for filtering later.
• Quantity. Number of balls or skeins, and the grams or yards in each.

Tracking what is left

As you use yarn on a project, update the remaining amount on the stash entry. YarnHub keeps the original quantity alongside what is left, so you can see at a glance which partial balls you have available for small projects.

A note on photos

You can attach a photo to any stash entry. In practice a picture of the actual ball in daylight is far more useful for matching colour later than the brand’s official swatch.
